Data residency for AI training data, and why five regions rather than one

· 2 min read · compliance, procurement
Data residency means data is stored and processed only within a defined jurisdiction. A contractual promise is not residency; enforcement in the system is. Ask a supplier to demonstrate that a contributor outside a region cannot access data inside it, rather than to confirm that policy forbids it.
The short version
- Residency is about enforced storage and processing boundaries.
- A contractual commitment is not the same as a technical control.
- Corpshore enforces five regional boundaries at the data layer.
- Project eligibility can be restricted to contributors within a region.
- Cross-region access should be demonstrably impossible, not merely prohibited.

See capabilitiesWhat does residency actually require?
That the data lives in a specific jurisdiction and that the people processing it are within the permitted set. Both halves matter, and the second is the one usually neglected: data stored correctly in Frankfurt and annotated by someone outside the permitted region has not stayed in region in any meaningful sense.
For regulated buyers this is frequently the question that decides whether a supplier can be used at all, ahead of price or quality.
Why is a contractual promise insufficient?
Because it is unfalsifiable from the outside and it fails silently. A policy that says data must not leave a region does not prevent it leaving; it only establishes who is at fault afterwards.
Enforcement at the data layer is different in kind. If the system cannot serve a row to a contributor outside the region, the promise is structural rather than procedural.
What should you ask a supplier to demonstrate?
Not a policy. Ask them to show what happens when an out-of-region account attempts to reach in-region work, and where in the system that is enforced.
Also ask how project eligibility is filtered. On a well-built platform a contributor never sees a listing they are not eligible for, which means residency restrictions cost the contributor nothing and cannot be circumvented by them.
- Where is the boundary enforced technically?
- What happens on an out-of-region access attempt?
- How is contributor eligibility filtered?
- Do backups and logs stay in region?
- Where do support staff sit?
People also ask
What is data residency for AI training data?
A requirement that data is stored and processed only within a defined jurisdiction, covering both where it is held and who is permitted to process it.
Is a contractual residency commitment enough?
No. A contract establishes fault after a breach but does not prevent one. Enforcement at the data layer, where out-of-region access is technically impossible, is a different kind of assurance.
How many data regions does Corpshore operate?
Five, with the regional boundary enforced in the data layer rather than promised in policy, and with contributor eligibility filtered so out-of-region listings are never shown.
